What exactly is AMD Ruyi?

It is a “consolidated” PC that has a customized “SoC” that integrates a Ryzen CPU that adds four cores and eight threads and an AMD Radeon RX Vega 24 GPU. The number indicates the number of computing units added by that GPU.

The graphic architecture used by AMD integrates 64 shaders per computer unit, which brings us to a total of 1,536 shaders at 1.3 GHz. The texture and raster units included in this GPU amount to 96 and 32, respectively. Its memory bus is 256 bits and it has 8 GB of GDDR5.

With these specifications we can make it clear that we are facing a team that is generally more powerful than PS4 Pro. The Sony console has a GPU with 2,304 shaders, but these work at 911 MHz, are based on a previous architecture and also share a block of 8 GB of GDDR5 that acts as graphic and system memory.

To this we must unite the processor, a key element when determining the real performance of the system. In PS4 Pro we have an eight-core 2.1 GHz Jaguar CPU , a low-power and low-performance architecture whose IPC is far from that achieved by Ryzen quad-core processor and eight threads at 3 GHz that integrates AMD Ruyi .

The idea is very interesting and I am quite surprised that AMD has spoken directly to SoC instead of APU. I cannot delve into the reasons that have led to this qualification since I still do not have much information about this new chip, but we will expand the news if we receive new information.

PS5 and Xbox Two: Ryzen and Navi

The idea of ​​launching consolidated PCs based on semi-personalized solutions is very interesting because of the progress they represent in terms of integration and reduction of space and costs, but also because of everything that allows us to anticipate and confirm the next generation consoles.

Those who read us every day have a pretty clear idea of ​​what we expect from PS5 and Xbox Two, and the development of AMD Ruyi does nothing more than confirm that the firm of Sunnyvale has prepared very powerful and efficient integrated solutions that can enhance without problems to both consoles.

With the release of PS4 and Xbox One, the Redmond giant made the mistake of choosing a semi-personal APU lower than the Sony one, something that has taken its toll and we do not think they will want to repeat with their next-generation console. We can assume that both consoles will use a Ryzen processor and a Navi GPU, and that in general terms the gross power of the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft will be at the height of a current high-end PC. However we must bear in mind that they will have specific development kits, and that thanks to the “miracle” of the optimization could end up offering superior results.
